However, every Summer, we hold an "Introduction to Judo" month-long session specifically designed for juniors, but also open to adults. This program typically runs Tuesdays and Thursday nights, 7:00pm-8:30pm, for the Month of June. It is currently held at the Dickinson High School Wrestling Room. Juniors and adults who wish to learn a bit about judo are treated to the Zen Judo Juniors syllabus. This restricted syllabus takes into account the growing bodies and maturity of juniors in it's instruction. It's also a shorter course of learning. It is open to students as young as 5 years of age. There is no upper age limit. Students who pass the final examination do recieve a Junior's rokkyu (yellow belt). The course is open to repeat participation, leading to Rank advancement. However, the Zen Judo Program limits Juniors to the rank of Yonkyu (green belt) until they are old enough to test as an Adult (age 16). While Judo may be preformed in street garb, instruction and routine falling is made easier with wearing the sturdy judo Gi. Juniors students are required to wear one. However, since junior's often out-grow clothes rapidly, We have a gi-rental program for the juniors sizes. Parents are also welcome to provide their own, so long as it is a Judo gi in good repair. Other martial arts' gis like Karate or Tae Kwan Do are much thinner and subject to rapid tearing. Currently, the class is $15.00. Judo Gi rental is an additional $35.00, of which $15 is a deposit to be returned to the participant once the club receives the gi back in good condition at the end of the program. We offer a SPECIAL DISCOUNT for Best Friends program participants. Big Brothers or Big Sisters who sign up with thier Little Brothers or Little Sisters have the class fee waived for one particpant! We also offer a "Serviceman's Discount". Any junior who has a parent actively serving on rotation in any branch of the US Military qualifies for this discount! Sign up can be made by contacting Roughrider Judo thru this site, or Sensei Jeff Ficek or Sensei Nick Lambert. Registration information is also available thru the Spring/Summer Dickinson Parks and Recreation Brouchure. The last day of class is devoted to an in-class competition--our "Teddy-Bear Tournament" and also to awarding belts for those who earn them.
