Sensei Jeff Ficek started judo under Sensei Borgen in Fargo in 1987. After participating in various martial arts across the country, he returned to his hometown, Dickinson, and judo at the Bismarck Gentle Ways Dojo in 1994. He received his Shodan in 2004.

Jeff's wife, Ruth Heley, participated in judo for many years as well, and is still active helping with off-the-mat dojo needs. Jeff is the "Proprietor and Chief Ditch-Digger" of Ron's Rural Backhoe Service in Dickinson.
